Hier soir, j’ai eu le plaisir de découvrir mon nouvel humoriste préféré : Yannick de Martino. Il m’a captivé dès ses premiers pas sur scène. Son style simple et monotone est charmant — on dirait qu’on ne s’attend pas à ce qu’il soit tellement drôle, puisqu’il y met à peine d’effort. C’est donc quelque chose qui lui vient au naturel, ces observations comiques et façon si désinvolte de les exprimer. Jumelé avec un talent pour taquiner et se moquer des spectateurs un peu – les mettre un peu mal à l’aise, mais sans méchanceté! Juste assez pour que ce soit drôle pour tout le monde – c’est impossible de ne pas avoir l’impression que Yannick est tout simplement un ami drôle qui te fait rire pendant que vous prenez une bière ensemble. de Martino a aussi essayé quelques autres gags à travers le spectacle – je n’ai pas tellement aimé ses “personnages” mais son exposition d’art visuel était hilarant, et il a terminé le spectacle en beauté avec un numéro musical absurde. En bref, le spectacle était extrêmement divertissant et je le recommende fortement. de Martino refera son spectacle solo ce soir à 19h au Studio Hydro-Québec, achetez vous billets ici et courez-y! Much hype has already been accorded to this award-winning solo show by Johanna Nutter, and I can now testify that it is entirely well-deserved. This honest, extremely personal show tells the story of how Johanna’s transgender brother had a baby, and how she struggled to maintain the balance of helping her family without devoting her life to them. It’s a touching story, and Johanna tells it well: it’s impossible not to feel moved by the hardships her family went through, to be on her side when she must stand her ground against her brother’s constant requests for money. She’s a bubbly, upbeat storyteller who can switch into the role of her surly, unstable brother and nervous, closed-minded mother in the blink of an eye. A talented performer, an extraordinary story — what more can you ask for in a Zoofest drama piece? My Pregnant Brother plays again July 26 and 27 at 8:45pm at Théâtre La Chapelle. victoria, i’m so glad you liked the show, and thank you for the review: there’s so much to do and see in montreal these days that endorsements such as these go a long way. i need to say that my mother is very far from being close-minded and the picture of my brother as a surly person who nags me for money is also way off base. if i gave you these impressions, then i did not do my job. i have seen these kinds of labels come up in reviews of the show before, and i know this can happen when space and time constricts a writer’s descriptions–in the play, i get a whole hour with which to describe my extraordinary family–i just felt, upon reading your review, that i needed to say a few words in defence of my mother and brother who are not here to do it for themselves. cheers, johanna
